Learn more about what Madison County has to offer.

Madison County offers residents a welcoming, close-knit community with rich history, abundant outdoor recreation, and a steady mix of local opportunities in education, work, and culture.

Madison County stands apart from nearby suburbs of Des Moines by blending small town familiarity with storybook scenery and practical access to the metro. Residents value the covered bridges, rolling farmland, and historic town squares, yet also appreciate an easy commute to West Des Moines and Waukee.

In Winterset, the county seat, you will find the Madison County Courthouse on the square, local shops, and community events that still draw neighbors together. Outdoor time is a way of life, from hiking and fishing at Pammel State Park to picnics and festivals at Winterset City Park. Families often point to the highly regarded Winterset Community School District and nearby Earlham schools when choosing where to settle.

Cultural anchors such as the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum and seasonal events keep the county’s identity front and center, while local dining and coffee spots give each town its own character. Housing options range from historic homes near the square to new builds on larger lots outside town, appealing to both first time buyers and those moving up.

Whether you are planning to buy or considering selling, timing and preparation matter in a market that can shift quickly between rural and commuter demand. Agent Pronto can connect you with a Madison County agent who understands these nuances and can guide both buyers and sellers with confidence.

“Lacie was amazing throughout the whole buying experience as a first-time home owner. She made every effort to keep me informed during our buying process and shown her expertise when any questions arose. When there were some questions she couldn't answer she was able to defer me to the appriorate subject-matter expert whether it was an electrician for electrical questions/work to inspection questions. She was absolutely fantastic to work with and would highly recommend her to friends and family that are looking to buy/sell now and later! Thank you Lacie Shelby for working with my partner and I. Thank you even more for making our first home purchase worth it!”
